Increasingly, employers are requiring job applicants to take writing tests in addition to the usual interview. Fairly, or unfairly, employers will not hire candidates who can not spell very well.  I tell my 12-year old this often.  If you spell poorly in a hand-written test or form where no spell checker is available, you will often not get the job.
