Playing Dictionary Scrabble - A Great Spelling and Vocabulary Builder

Home > Spelling Activities > Dictionary Scrabble

In this variation of the game Scrabble, players play the game with the regular rules except with the following variations:

  • A player may use a dictionary to look up words. The player must give the definition of the word to the others when he/she uses it. Looked-up words count for the regular amount.

  • If a player spells a word without the dictionary, then the player receives double the regular points.

  • A word may be challenged at any time with no penalty to the challenger.  If the challenged word is incorrectly spelled, the player simply loses their turn. If the challenged word is correct, there is no penalty. This rule prevents a player from looking up several words in a turn and getting double credit on subsequent turns - if they look up future words, then they must remember the correct spelling. No words may be written down.

With these rules, players will expand their vocabulary and sharpen their spelling.  This would be a good free-time activity during the school day, or a fun family activity in the evening.
