Weather Teaching Unit & Lesson Plans Including Weather Experiments For Kids

Weather For Kids
Doing a summer weather unit might make a nice family project over the summer. Or it might serve as a good homeschool weather lesson plan or unit. We are doing such a unit this summer. It consists of the following:
- Covering a Weather Chapter in our science book. We are using Exploring Creation, but you could probably use any 9th grade level Physical Science book with a weather unit or you could get a book or books from the library explaining weather in an introductory manner. Also, the internet has good material you could use, such as found at usatoday.com. What we usually do is read the text aloud and then discuss principles.
- Conduct weather experiments. We constructed a "weather chamber" that allowed us to reproduce the warm air currents that flow from the equator north and then back again as the air cools. Also with this weather chamber we were able to create our own rain! Also, we simulated the vortex of a tornado with a very simple tornado in a jar experiment!
- Keep a log of the weather conditions for 1-5 weeks. With this information, we were able to draw conclusions about how humidity, jet stream, barometric pressure, and other factors determined the weather. See Weather Data Experiment for details .
You will find that your kids will like learning about the weather if they see that you are enthusiastic about this whole project as well!
