The "Science Encyclopedia" ISBN 1-84084-419-1, was given to me by a friend a while back. It turned out to be a great reference book. It relates science concepts in chemistry & physics to real-world applications at a level that an average 10 or 12 year old can understand. It also has experiments in the appendix. I have found this book my friend picked up at Sam's Club to be better than many regular school texts. I will have my son write papers summarizing several pages that we read and discuss together. This proves to be a good writing activity as well as a science lesson. We have also done some of the science experiments.
