Experiment Showing How Electrons Give Off Energy

Home > Science Activities > Electron Experiment

In this very easy experiment requiring only a regular florescent light bulb, you can show how electrons are excited and jump from lower to higher energy levels.  Then, when they fall back to lower levels. They give off visible light.  All you need is a working florescent tube bulb and a dry furry or fuzzy towel.  Better yet, use a piece of fur (synthetic fur works fine) as shown below.

     INSTRUCTIONS
  • Go in completely darkened room.
  • Rub florescent bulb with fuzzy dry cloth or fur.
  • Observe the light given off
  • Note: NO Household or Battery Power is needed. The static electricity from the fur or cloth provides the energy needed to bump the electrons up to the higher levels.
