Make a Homemade Battery - This Home Made Battery Works!

Home > Science Activities > Home Made Battery

You can make a working home made battery by using 10 copper pennies, aluminum foil, paper towel, electrical tape, salt water, and two small wires. You can then verify that your battery works with a voltmeter.

     INSTRUCTIONS
  • Cut out 10 circles of aluminum foil the size of a penny.
  • Cut out 20 squares of paper towel slightly bigger than a penny.
  • Stack the pennies, foil, paper as shown below with a penny, then paper, then foil, then paper, repeated.
  •  Tape one wire to top penny and one wire to bottom foil.
  • Place long strip of tape all the way around to hold stack together.
  • Soak stack in salt water.
  • Use a voltmeter to measure the voltage. Even though there is little current, the voltage will be near 0.5 volts.
