Saxon Math Review by Michael Sakowski

Home > Text Reviews > Saxon Math

I have been using Saxon Math for home schooling my 12 year old for several years now. Here are what I perceive to be the plusses and minuses:

PLUSSES

  • Easy for student to work independently since only small amounts of new material are introduced in each lesson.

  • Constant review of previously covered topics.

  • A CD-ROM with instructor presentations for each lesson is available.  This also helps in allowing the student to work more independently.

MINUSES

  • Some bigger concepts can not be covered in depth due to the design of the text. The teacher must develop lessons that cover these bigger concepts to supplement the text from time to time.

  • Topics do not follow a hierarchical structure. For example, in Saxon Math 8/7, you have LESSON 58 Line Symmetry & Functions, LESSON 59 Adding Integers on the Number Line, and then LESSON 60 Fractional Part of a Number, Part 1. A traditional text would use an entire chapter to address operations with positive and negative integers.
